The Research Manager, Client Virtualization and IT Service Management is responsible for researching, writing and advising clients on current and emerging/next-generation IT and application management strategies and products. The Research Manager will be responsible for managing an existing client virtualization and IT service management research program. This includes serving as both thought leader and subject matter expect in the management domain and in delivering consulting expertise, customized research and technical white papers and presentations to external audiences.


  • Technology Analysis: Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) as it pertains to client virtualization, IT service management and expand coverage and research in the areas of DevOps, cloud management, container management and performance and availability management. Specifically, across – technologies, products, vendors, and associated services. Leverages deep insight on product architectures to analyze technologies that are potentially disruptive.
  • Thought leadership: Strategizes and provides thought leadership on management technologies, leading use cases, adoption trends, architectural considerations, market dynamics and competitive alternatives. Understands and articulates the impact of emerging business and technology trends and their implications for client and its customers.
  • Consulting: Develops and/or customizes research and consulting projects to meet the specific needs of the external customers. Consulting projects can come in the form of technical papers, webcasts, on-site strategy sessions, primary research, videos or presentations at events.
  • Verbal & Written Communications: Provides expertise to in the form of authoring technology analysis, use case papers, case studies, presentations at conferences and events, technical whitepapers and other thought-leading research reports/studies. An enjoyment in writing about data center technology, use cases and deployments is essential for success in this position.
  • Business Development: Utilizes technical knowledge to develop and implement solutions that drive change to gain competitive market share, control costs, increase operational efficiencies, improve productivity, accelerate delivery time, enhance customer service, drive revenue, and cultivate business growth. The Research Manager will work closely with IDC Sales to build and nurture new business.


  • Extensive knowledge of the enterprise IT management industry, at least five years of expertise, serving in a consulting or advisory capacity to clients.
  • A passion for client engagement with previous business development and P&L management expertise.
  • Management software expertise - including architectures, services and strategies used to deploy IT resources for physical, container-based and virtual machine deployments on premises and in the cloud.
  • Knowledge of client virtualization and IT service management is required. Additionally, knowledge of data center automation, virtualization and container management, DevOps and performance and availability management a plus
  • Strong technical background in enterprise systems management architectures and deployments, and their use cases. Understanding of emerging technologies such as containers, container management
  • Ability to travel up to 30%-35% during Spring and Fall periods (Travel varies depending on coverage area and client events)
