The Research Director of Semiconductors is responsible for the business sustainability of our syndicated program, relationships with our strategic clients, and domain expertise of the wireless and connectivity semiconductor technology ecosystem. The role includes supporting our primary and secondary research efforts, business development, and consulting projects related to our coverage of wireless and connectivity semiconductors in mobile phones, personal computing, and industrial and embedded market segments.


Specific areas of coverage:

  • Coverage in smart phones, tablets, and PC semiconductors:
    • Current coverage includes all the mobile silicon functional areas in a mobile phone and tablet including baseband, application processor, RF, analog, memory, storage and connectivity technologies.
  • Quarterly market share deliverables that are critical to IDC’s CIS customers, Tech Investor and IRS customers.
  • Coverage of connectivity technologies including:
    • Connectivity technologies span cellular (2G/3G/4G/5G), Zigbee, WiFi, Bluetooth, WiGiG, Ethernet and LPWAN technologies that are core technologies for the IoT.
    • Leads the connectivity research across more than 300 system segments and creates a roadmap for future segments and technologies to be covered
    • Coverage of the industrial and M2M semiconductor area including include mobile, industrial, healthcare, retail, and medical
    • Coverage of quarterly wireless forecasts and market share deliverables for the Semiconductor Application Forecaster program
  • Supports IRS and Tech Investor inquiries and road shows


Quantitative Analysis Includes:


  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and SPSS
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail in data generation and review                                
  • Data Collection using appropriate sources, validating and crossing checking to ensure data reliability
  • Proficient with large datasets
  • Ability to clearly communicate and report data analysis
  • Ability to forecast and publish timely changes to market conditions, with limited supervision            
  • Timely forecasting/predictions reflecting market changes

Business Development/ Program Growth

  • Revenue growth continually increasing number of clients
  • Revenue growth through other types of revenue (honorarium, report sales, consulting)
  • Contribution to the financial success of the group
  • Expense management
  • Knows target marketing for sales purposes
  • Identifies new client bases
  • Demonstrates ability to develop new products


  • Bachelor's degree required, MBA a plus
  • 10+ years of previous market research experience or in a related industry
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for client inquiry and internal collaboration
  • Excellent documentation skills along with verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate and report data analysis
  • Demonstrated ability in working under pressure and competing deadlines
  • Ability to forecast and publish timely changes to market conditions
  • Exhibits industry presence and Thought Leadership                                             
  • Ability to travel 7-10%
  • Writes documents that are actionable and relevant for the target audience
  • Ability and interest in collaborating in a global environment
