    IDC is seeking a Research Director with experience in Small and Midsized Businesses to join the IDC team to conduct primary research, engage in  quantitative research management, client engagement and business development.




    • Develop diverse research documents to support different SMB program components, including annual market forecasts and FutureScape documents
    • Provide guidance and insight on the SMB market (SBs: firms with <100 employees, MBs: firms with 100-999 employees), thought leadership to clients. Frequent interactions with clients, prospects and vendors is expected in keeping with role of SMB leadership.
    • Support syndicated research and custom projects simultaneously and work independently to support a range of publishing, consulting, forecasting, market modeling, and thought leadership activities simultaneously.
    • Business development to nurture current and potential clients to develop and grow business relationships for CIS subscriptions and custom consulting work.
    • Manage SMB program budget with monthly, quarterly, and annual targets for revenues, expenses, contribution, and profit.
    • Provide managerial leadership for staff recruitment, training, and nurturing to support program expansion.
    • Understand data collection and analysis using appropriate primary and secondary sources to ensure sound interpretation and results-oriented recommendations.
    • Apply strong analytical skills with attention to detail in data generation, refinement, and review. Demonstrate flexibility/creativity in refining/filtering data in innovative ways to provide new insights. This can include integrating qualitative and quantitative information to provide client guidance.
    • Establish and maintain a strong industry presence as an SMB thought leader, including working with the general business and technology trade press. Bringing an innovative and creative perspective on the role technology is playing in the changing SMB market will be part of thought leadership.



    • Bachelor's degree required, MBA a plus
    • 10+ years of previous market research experience with research firm or technology firm.
    • Diverse background across multiple technology areas (eg., hardware, software, services, telecom, cloud)
    • Strong classical market research skills including sample development, survey design, and quantitative analysis. Experience with statistical packages (eg. SPSS, WinCross) essential.
    • Strong verbal and written communications skills essential. The position requires successful candidate to provide quantitative analysis and insight on the changing SMB market to clients in a clear and compelling way.
    • Facility with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to learn to use various IDC resources for document preparation, publishing, client inquiry tracking, and program financial performance.
    • Ability to travel (<40%) almost exclusively domestic
    • Ability to prepare timely forecasting/predictions reflecting market changes. Ability to integrate sometimes conflicting inputs for forecasting.
    • Strong commitment to client support/success and enthusiasm for program mission.
    • Interest in strengthening existing client relationships and driving new business opportunities. Willingness to work closely with IDC sales, often taking the lead in identifying new opportunities and crafting effective proposals to grow revenue. Strong ties to current IDC clients/prospects a plus.
